BIDDERS have the chance to buy the interbreed champion beef animal from this year's Great Yorkshire Show.

Tweeddale Hawkeye, who was also British Blue breed champion at the Royal Welsh Show, is one of 91 lots in the dispersal sale of the award winning Tweeddale British Blue herd at Borderway mart, Carlisle, on Friday, August 21.

The Redhead and Watson families who farm at Bowsden Moor, Northumberland, established the herd ten years ago and the 91 lots will include 29 cows and heifers served and/or suckling, eight in-calf heifers, seven cross cows and pedigree calves or pregnant recipients, 12 maiden heifers, 12 young bulls and 23 lots of Grade A frozen embryos.

Hawkeye, a three-year-old heifer, which is due to calve in October, made history at the Great Yorkshire Show, becoming the first British Blue to win an interbreed championship at any of the major UK agricultural shows.

Jonathan Watson, herd owner, said: "When we first established the herd it was always our intention to develop it over ten years and see how far we could take it. We started out with three heifers purchased from the Broomfield Herd, and have slowly built it up from there.

"We’ve had the most tremendous ten years, and have in this time achieved far more than we could ever have dreamt of. It has been an absolute pleasure in this time to be a part of the British Blue Cattle Society and community. Jayne, I and the boys would like to thank everyone for their support over the years, and wish the society the very best for the future."

They have bred their cattle for their large size, prominent double muscling, sloping rump, hidden hips, a straight back and mobility.

Scott Donaldson, H&H sales director, said: “The Tweeddale British Blues have really made a name for themselves. Their cattle consistently reach high prices when up for sale at Borderway."
