A VISIT by a Chinese delegation to see how the British wool industry operates at every level proved a success.

The British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) hosted representatives from the Chinese wool industry. The tour included its Bradford headquarters, its main grading depot, electronic auction system, as well scourers and farms.

Ian Hartley, chief executive, said: "It was important for the Chinese to see the professionalism of the grading process alongside the wide variety of British wools."

Chinese buyers account for about 30 per cent of wool sold through BWMB auctions. Mr Hartley said: "Our competitive auction system ensures every fleece sold through the Board is sold to its best advantage."

BWMB’s involvement at every level of the wool supply chain was one aspect the Chinese were particularly interested in. "Through our work with shearers, farmers and wool depots we can influence wool quality and supply through education and training, helping ensure our producers receive the best possible prices," said Mr Hartley.

Zhou Ge of JiangYin HengHao Wool Textile Co said the visit to BWMB and Haworth Scouring at Bradford had been extremely valuable.

"British wool is often used for the manufacture of woollen garments in China where Chinese processors use special processing techniques to incorporate certain British wools in to high quality garments. This visit was a great opportunity to see which wools can fit this new market."
