HEREFORD breeders John, William & Andrew McMordie of Ballygowan, Co. Down, dominated this week’s Hereford Cattle Society Spring Sale held at Hereford Livestock Market.

Their achievements selling the top price bull, 22 month old Solpoll 1 KitKat by Panmure 1 Henry. Weighing 860kgs he sold for 10,800gns to AE Nesbitt Farms of Hungerford, Berkshire.

Following closely behind was their 23 month old Solpoll 1 Karate Kid, weighing 935kgs, and selling for 10,500gns to Oyston Estates, Lytham, Lancashire. They also sold two other bulls – Solpoll 1 Landmark and Solpoll 1 Lamborghini – for 8,200gns and 4,800gns.

In the show female section the father and son partnership of John & William McMordie saw their reserve female champion, the 25 month old in-calf heifer, Solpoll 1 Stardust K20 by Panmure 1 Henry, sell for 4,200gns to breed newcomers Murton Grange, based near Thirsk.

Murton Grange also purchased their 25 month old in-calf heifer, Solpoll 1 Starlet K23 by Fisher 1 Charlie, for 3,900gns and their 17 month old maiden heifer, Solpoll 1 Amber L8 by the Danish bull, Moeskaer Keno 1222 for 3,800gns.

Murton Grange's buying spree continued with two 14 month-old daughters of Dorepoll 1 L499 High Society – Frenchstone P. 1 Etia and Ellen – from LR & AM Ayre, Devon, bought for 3,900gns and 3,700gns respectively.

They also bought two year-old twins Normanton 1 Baby Button 1st K1035 and Baby Button 2nd K1035 for 2,500gns each from TD & WT Livesey, Leicestershire. The twins were by Normanton 1 Eastern Promise.

Sale results: 23 bulls averaged £4,286.75 to total £98,595.00;17 show heifers sold for £54,390.00 to average £3,199.41; 17 in-calf heifers averaged £2,056.76; 15 maiden heifers averaged £1,554; 36 for sale only females sold for £68,775 to average £1,910.42.
