MOLE Valley Farmers has appointed Alan Callaghan as Head of Feeds North to help farmers in the north of England and Scotland benefit from the services and support available from the farmer-owned business.

Alan’s appointment follows Mole Valley Farmers’ joint investment with John C Fergusson in a state-of-the-art compound feed mill in Coylton, Ayrshire. Due to fully open in the spring, the mill will have a capacity of 120,000t of compounds and 70,000t of blends.

With more than 20 years' experience in the feed industry, Alan has been brought in to ensure farmers in the north can benefit from Mole Valley Farmers’ combined scale of more than 40,000 members.

Alan will be heading up a new team of specialist ruminant nutritionists and will split his time between the existing feed mill at Piercebridge, Darlington, and the new mill at Coylton. He explains how the business’s aim is to back up value, quality products with expert support and advice.

“With the recent drop in milk price, it’s crucial that cows perform to their optimum and you can only do that by using people that offer on-farm business advice and understand the needs of the cow,” he said.

The team will support Mole Valley Farmers’ current activities in the Midlands and North-East England, while building on the feed infrastructure throughout north-west of England and south-west Scotland.
