North East Charolais breeders were in the money in Stirling on Tuesday (17) at the breed’s official spring sale.

Bidding peaked at 18,000gns, 15 lots traded at five figure sums and 136 lots sold to average £6,821 and grossed just over £1m leaving Charolais to again take the lead at the UK’s spring multi-beef breed sales. A further 10 bulls sold outside the ring bringing the day’s clearance rate to 81 per cent.

The sale leader was Clyth Indestructable, an 18 month old by Goldies Eddy from Ron Mackay, Caithness, which was bought by Billy Turner's BRampton herd at Skelton-on-Ure, Ripon.

The day’s second highest bid of 16,000gns went to the 20 month old Burradon Insomniac, by 12,000gns Gwenog Banjo from Chris Curry, Thropton, Morpeth to John and James Jeffrey, Kelso. Minutes later, Mr Curry offered Burradon Impresario, a 20 month old Puntabrava Frederico son for 8,000gns to J and M MacDonald, Caithness.

Mr Curry invested some of his takings when he teamed up with the Campbell family, Thrunton, Alnwick, and paid 14,000gns for the junior champion, Blelack Imperialist, a 17 month old from father and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie, Aboyne.

The Campbells more than recouped their spend with two entries by the 26,000gns Balmyle Dickler selling for 9,000gns each. First was the 20 month old Thrunton Invader sold to T Howden and Sons, Midlothian while Thrunton Illustrious went to H Wilson, Girvan. Next best at 8,500gns was Thrunton Irelander, a 17 month old by Dickler to WJ Lewis and Son, Brecon.

Alsnow Imperial, a 21 month old from Alan Lawson and Son, Hallington, Newcastle, sold for 12,000gns to RB Millar, Dundee.

Averages: 136 bulls £6,821; 10 females £3,118.50. Mornity: five females £2,362.50.
