A FARMER’S collection of classic tractors is to go under the hammer at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

John Metcalfe, of Washfold Farm, Leyburn, has been an avid collector of classic tractors for many years but has now decided to sell the majority of his 30 machines.

Many date back to the 1940s and 1950s, however, the star is undoubtedly the 1917 Ministry of Munitions machine built in the USA and sent as one of 6,000 to boost the war effort. It is expected to attract keen interest from collectors.

Mr Metcalfe said: “This one is probably a unique combination, it is number 153 of 750,000 and has a Ferguson plough with it. I wasn’t going to sell it at first but I changed my mind, but I shall be slightly sad to see it go.”

Mr Metcalfe is to keep a few tractors to continue displaying at local shows.

The tractors and some spare parts will be auctioned by Cheffins of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Show Ground on Saturday, August 16. See cheffins.co.uk/vintage/catalogues
