THE volume and value of UK sheep meat exports performed strongly last year.

Volumes rose nine per cent to 103,200 tonnes on 2012, while the value of sheep meat exports for the same period rose eight per cent to £381.6 million.

The AHDB/Eblex Cattle and Sheep Yearbook 2014 also shows a substantial growth in exports to non-EU markets - shipments totalled 17,600 tonnes, compared to 12,300 tonnes in 2012.

The book also reveals that, after a poor start the lamb market largely recovered, finishing with a final GB average deadweight price of 414.1 p/kg up from 401.3p/ kg in 2012.

Despite the beef market easing in the second half of 2013, the final GB average deadweight steer R4L price was up 45p/kg on 2012 - up 13 per cent - at 395.4p/kg.

The Yearbook gives a detailed analysis of UK beef and sheep meat production, including information on production and exports , as well as data on livestock numbers, consumption, auction markets, abattoirs, and carcase classification.
