A LIMOUSIN bull from York took the supreme championship and joint 7,000gns top price at the tenth anniversary Limousin Day show and sale at Newark market on Saturday.

Millington Hampton from Millington Limousins, of The Grange, Millington, near York, was an embryo calf by Wilodge Vantastic and out of the Ronick matador sired Brockhurst Option.

May 2012-born, with a beef value of LM+42, he had emerged as the intermediate champion before being tapped out as supreme champion by judge Eric Norman of the noted Norman herd of Little Orton, Carlisle.

He said: “This bull had plenty of power and was really well put together. He had good shape, was naturally muscled, and had very good locomotion.”

Hampton was bought by the Gascoines Group of Southwell, Notts. The show and sale was established in 2004 and this year featured 635 head of pedigree and commercial Limousin cattle for sale. The pedigree trade saw 47 of the 51 bulls sold – a 92pc clearance rate – to an average of just under £3,600, up by more than £100 on the year.

Also at 7,000gns was Coachhouse Hathaway from Messrs Heald & Co, of Retford, Notts.

Born in June 2012, this bull was reserve intermediate champion to Millington Hampton.

Hathaway is by Overthwaite Cracker and is out of the Haltcliffe Hercules daughter Coachhouse Rouge. He was bought by GP Mayo, Towcester, Northants.

Other prices included 6,000gns for Ironstone Harley from Smiths, of Bloxham, Banbury, when sold to Messrs Knight, of Stoke Doyle, Oundle, Peterborough.

Messrs Foster, of Garrow by Hill, Bishop Wilton, York, paid 5,500gns for Lowgate Harold from Ian Brown, of Holbeach, Lincs.
