A MOVE away from a weekend to a Tuesday for the Hereford Cattle Society’s Spring Sale paid dividends when all but one of the cattle offered for sale in Hereford Livestock Market found a home.

Fifteen show heifers sold for £37,747.50 to an average of £2,516.50. JRB Wilson and Sons, Kelso, sold their 17 month-old Romany 1 Plum for the top female price of 4,500gns to breed newcomers Martel Herefords, Pembrokeshire, who later bought another of their heifers – 18 month old Romany 1 Lucy – for 2,400 gns.

Out of 27 bulls, 26 sold for £88,147.50, to average £3,390.

The champion, 21-month-old Lowesmoor 1 Jockey, exhibited by MJ Clark, Gloucester, topped the sale at 6,000 gns. “Jockey”, by the home-bred Lowesmoor 1 Gauloise , weighing 910 kgs, was purchased by MJ Burton of Leigh, Surrey. Other leading prices included Messrs W & R Kemp & Sons, of Bishop Auckland, who sold their 24-monthold Auckvale Jonty for 3,700 gns.

“Jonty” a Superior Carcase Sire, sired by Auckvale Advance 790E, weighed 900 kgs and was purchased by Portway Farm Partnership, Gloucestershire.

JRB Wilson & Sons, Kelso, sold their 17-month-old Romany 1 Kinetic for 3,000 gns. Weighing 710 kgs, and sired by Spurstow 1 Recruit 1st, he was purchased by R Archer, of Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

The sale culminated with a strong trade for non-show females resulting in all 28 offered selling for £57,225 to average £2,043.75.
