CULL cows topped at £2,106 for a Blonde d’Aquitaine cow at Gisburn Auction Mart’s Christmas cull cow show.

Presented by John & Jean Bradley, Giggleswick, Settle, the seven-and-half-year-old cow, weighing 936kgs, was knocked down to Owain Llyr, from Ruthin, North Wales.

The full-bodied cow earlier in the day was awarded the first prize rosette in continental cow class and later went on to win the reserve champion award judged by Ross Greenwood, Carleton, Skipton and Harry Thompson, Gargrave, Skipton.

The same purchaser also picked up the champion animal and winner of the first-prize rosette in the British Blue class.

This seven-and-half-year-old homebred cow was from Geoff Walker, from Dunsop Bridge, Clitheroe. Weighing 780kgs, she achieved £1,708.20 under the hammer.

Mr Walker’s next lot was another homebred British Blue cow which picked up the secondprize rosette in the British Blue class and sold for a staggering 238p/kg or £1,637.40 to Mr Thompson, the pre-sale show judge.

Another vendor to achieve over 200p/kg was Peter Holt, of Loveclough, Rossendale, who sold his British Blue cull cow weighing 702kgs for 226p/kg or £1586.52.
