John overcomes challenges to bring home the hybrid barley

A YORKSHIRE farmer fought off the challenges of this season’s weather to harvest a barley yield of 11.987 tonnes per hectare with a crop of Hyvido hybrid winter feed barley.
John Porter, a partner of FA Porter and Sons, Skirlaugh, near Hull, has been growing hybrid barley for more than five years.
This year, he was hoping to set a new Guinness World Record for the highest barley yield. But despite not breaking the record – set by a yield of 12.2 tonnes/ha of winter barley – he was still delighted with the crop’s performance.
“It’s amazing considering the winter,”
said Mr Porter, “Hybrid barley has an enormous yield potential. Everything looked against it.
“Early spring growth wasn’t rapid because of the temperature. It was only from late April onwards that it started to grow. To get as close as that is testament to the potential of the variety, I would suggest.”
Following this yield, and having previously achieved yields of between 11 and 12 tonnes per hectare, Mr Porter already has plans to plant all the winter barley area grown on the farm next season with Hyvido hybrid barley.
