Conference focus is on resilience
3:22pm Friday 16th August 2013 in Farming
THE Northern Farming Conference is heading north this year to Hexham auction mart Now in its fourth year its “muddy boots” approach aims to make it interesting and useful to active farmers and help them plan for the next 12 months and beyond.
Harry Chrisp, chairman, Northumberland farmer and a solicitor at Gibson & Co in Hexham, said: “This years theme is risk and resilience, which covers a range of subjects including the weather, commodity prices, produce markets, financial instability and uncertainty about the outcome of CAP reforms.
“The extreme weather conditions we have witnessed over the past year and the huge financial impact it has had on farmers clearly illustrates the need to build resilience in to the business to cushion the impacts of such factors.
“The Northern Farming Conference is fundamentally about farming at a “muddy boots” level and this year will be no different. We hope many farmers will find the day useful, stimulating and beneficial.”
Held on Wednesday, November, 13, the speakers include David Heath, Minister of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Allan Buckwell, leading economist.
Ian Pye, North West dairy farmer and Nuffield Scholar; Simon Bainbridge, Northumberland farmer and monitor farm project lead; and Borders beef farmer Donald MacPherson.
This year farmers with a County Parish Holding (CPH) number qualify for a 50 per cent discount, bringing the ticket price down to £20.
Mr Chrisp said: “We are very keen to ensure we attract as many active farmers as possible and I am delighted we have been able to halve the ticket price for them.”
The conference is a joint venture between the CLA, Strutt & Parker, Bond Dickinson, Armstrong Watson, Catchment Sensitive Farming and Gibson & Co Solicitors.
Last year it was held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.
Tickets cost £40 per person (£20 for farmers with a CPH number). Full details at northernfarmingconference.
