Student gamekeeper award for Anthony, 19
3:46pm Friday 26th July 2013 in Farming
A 19 year-old student from North Yorkshire has been named Gamekeeping Student of the Year.
Anthony Orr has just completed his level 2 apprenticeship in game and wildlife management at Askham Bryan College and is now under keeper on the 7,000-acre Spaunton Estate, near Scarborough.
The National Gamekeepers’ Association (NGO) presented him with The Frank Jenkins Memorial Trophy, at the CLA Game Fair on Saturday.
Anthony, from Rosedale near Pickering, is from a family of gamekeepers and originally began his apprenticeship with his uncle on the Egton Estate, near Whitby, before moving to Spaunton.
He said: “Gamekeeping is in my blood. My dad, uncle and younger brother are all gamekeepers so it’s wonderful to win this trophy.
“I know my future lies with upland birds and my dream in 20 years’ time is to be an upland keeper, running a successful shoot.”
He paid tribute to the help and support given to him by George Thompson, headkeeper at Spaunton, and Andrew Emsley, his tutor at Askham Bryan.
Mr Emsley said the award was testament to Anthony’s hard work and dedication, both in the classroom and on the moor.
“I am sure that in time he will realise his ambition, not least because of his forward thinking, his talent and commitment to the industry,”
“He is a credit to his family, the college and to the gamekeeping world.
We are all very proud of him.”
On behalf of the judges, Lindsay Waddell, chairman of the 13,500- member NGO, commented on the high number of first-rate entrants coming into the industry.
“There were a few young keepers hard on his heels, but Anthony is most certainly a worthy winner by any standard,” he said, “He has made a wonderful start in gamekeeping.”
Musto, who sponsored the award, provided Anthony with a wardrobe of its all-weather shooting clothing.
He also received a shooting jacket and an engraved crystal tankard.
