HGCA has published a new variety diversification scheme for wheat brown rust – the first of its kind for the disease.
There are four brown rust diversification groups (BRDGs) made up of varieties with susceptibility to the same types of brown rust.
Those in BRDG1 have good resistance to all races of brown rust while those in BRDG2, 3 and 4 are susceptible to certain races. Growers can reduce the risk of brown rust spreading between neighbouring crops by choosing varieties from different groups.
