ASDA is being urged not to switch its fresh lamb supplier in Wales to avoid the closure of a local lamb plant and the loss of 350 jobs.
The Vion Group has announced it could be forced to close its Welsh Country Foods plant on the Isle of Anglesey because Asda, its main customer for fresh lamb products, had found an alternative supplier.
Unite, Wales’ largest union, has pledged to do all it can to help save the plant and will raise the threat with the Welsh government.
Julia Long, Unite national officer for the sector, said: “A glimmer of hope is that the Vion Food Group realises the gravity of the situation and has pledged to have discussions with Asda to see if the decision to close the Anglesey plant can be overturned.”
