It's Mother's Day on Sunday so long-standing Northern Echo columnist Peter Barron goes in search of some value-for-money gifts with our Country Life specialist Sam Turner & Sons...

MY mum says the same thing every year: "Don't get me anything for Mother's Day - there's nothing I really need."

But I know, and she knows, she doesn't really mean it. And, anyway, how could I let Mother's Day go by without treating the woman who brought me into the world?

Like most blokes, I know I'm leaving it a bit late so I've been checking out the Sam Turner & Sons website for ideas ahead of the big day.

I'm spoiled for choice but I've selected the following items as my top six Mother's Day buys.

I'll be honest, she won't be getting all of them (I love her, but not that much!). That said, I hope it gives you a few ideas of what to buy your Mum...

1. BAGS OF STYLE: My Mum is no different to any other woman - she loves bags - and this one seemed a good place to start. What I like about it is it's two bags in one and that really appeals to my eye for a bargain. It's called the Joules Reversible Shoulder Bag, Revery grey, Whitstable Floral and is priced at £44.96.

2. KEEP HER WARM: Even in the summer, the temperatures can be pretty chilly in this country so I thought it would be a good idea to buy my Mum a Baleno Women's Fleece Gilet - Sally Burgundy. A luxurious fleece gilet trimmed with faux suede and reasonably priced at £54.95.

3. GIVE HER A HEAD-START: I loved this hat when I saw it and I can really see my Mum in it. This one is listed as Olney Hats Ruth Multi-Wax and Flower Olive and, like other hats in the range it's one-size-fits-all thanks to an elasticated internal headband. It also comes with a water-proof membrane and fleece lining - all for just £31.

4. HELP HER RELAX: I know we've only just got over The Beast From The East but I spotted the Sturdi Relaxer and Taupe Cushion and couldn't help thinking of summer. With high quality tubular frames and cushions perfect for relaxing in the sun, I reckon my Mum would love this and the price of £54.95 isn't going to break the bank.

5. A TASTE OF ITALY: Now this really is great value - the Le Xpress Italian  6-Cup Coffee-maker for just £14.50. Designed to brew superior tasting coffee by forcing high-pressure water through ground coffee to produce exceptional full-bodied coffee flavour. Bellissimo!

6. SIP AT A SNIP: I'll be honest - I couldn't believe this price. If I'm thinking about a coffee-maker, I might combine it with something nice to drink it out of. I spotted this Emma Bridgewater Wallflower 2-Tone Melamine Cup for £4.99 and thought it was beautiful.

Like I said, I'm spoiled for choice...
