IT'S that time of year when the leaves turn red as the cooler weather approaches and the thoughts of salmon turn to laying their eggs.
With temperatures forecasted to dip over the next few days, the signs of advancing autumn are everywhere. Particularly striking are the flaming hues of the Virginia Creeper covering the front wall of the 17th century Morritt Country House Hotel at Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, County Durham.
Meanwhile, one of nature's most spectacular sights can be witnessed on the banks of the River Tyne in Northumberland, as thousands of migrating salmon head up to their spawning grounds in the Pennines.
At Hexham Weir, they can be seen leaping from the turbulent waters as the try navigate the obstacle on their route upstream.
