- The season at Ripon Spa may be said to be begin with Easter, though the baths and the sulphur water have been in requisition more of less throughout the winter. Easter, whether early or late, always bring its strong contingent of holidaymakers, the Spa and the adjacent palatial Hydro being additional attractions to Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey.

From this newspaper 50 years ago. - When a Hunter jet fighter based on Thornaby aerodrome got into difficulties over Teesside yesterday afternoon, the pilot, Flt.-Lieut.

Harry Hood, who lives in the Officers' Married Quarters at Middleton St George, came to ground safely after using the ejector. The plane crashed into marshy ground near Mr J R Hall's farm, Cowpen Bewley, Billingham, but did not catch fire.

The pilot's escape and the crash were seen by two farm workers, 27 year old Thomas Lappin and 17 year old Alan Nelson, who were in the fields. They took Flt.-Lieut. Hood back to the farm in their horse and cart and after being given a cup of tea he was taken back to Thornaby Aerodrome in a police car.

From this newspaper 10 years ago. - Traders have reacted with jubilation after Hambleton District Council announced a climbdown in its bid to impose parking charges.

Conservative members appeared subdued and resigned as their leader, Coun June Imeson, read a prepared statement outlining the surprise move at a full meeting of the council on Tuesday afternoon.

She said public reaction against the plans had forced the ruling group to reconsider the issue.
