From this newspaper 100 years ago.
- A voracious trout. Whilst fishing in
the river Yore on Saturday, Mr T
Chapman, Hawes, caught a trout
which weighed 1 lbs. On handling
the fish, Mr Chapman was surprised
to discover in its throat a newly
hatched chicken. Several other good
dishes of trout were caught on Friday
and Saturday.
From this newspaper 50 years
ago. - The North Riding Education
Committee decided at its meeting in
Northallerton to submit to the Minister
of Education for approval, of a
school building programme totalling
£1,014,186. The programme
covers schools in Thirsk, Saltburn,
Redcar, Whitby and Scarborough
and the proposals came within the
category limited to those needed to
deal with the increased number of
children.
From this newspaper 25 years
ago. - The number of offences
recorded in County Durham in the
last three months of 1982 showed a
17.85 per cent increase on the same
period in the previous year. The figures
are included in a report from
Mr Eldred Boothby, Chief Constable,
in his report to the county police
committee. The total number of
crimes was 8,573. The number of
thefts rose 447 to 4,235 which was
mainly due to increases in thefts
from vehicles and thefts of vehicles.
Crimes of violence rose from 346 to
468 Mr Boothby said that increases
in number of general assaults and
woundings and indecent assaults
on females were mainly to blame.
Burglaries increased as well with
burglaries in homes increasing by
291 to 1,163 and burglaries in shops
and offices rising by 360 to 1,477.
From this newspaper 10 years
ago. - Staff at what was one of
Northallerton's biggest employers
are celebrating a multi-million
pound order to boost their numbers
once more. Workers at the former
York Trailers plant in Yafforth Road
have welcomed the first major order
since the ailing company was taken
over by a US firm to form Utility International
in January. Substantial
investment from the parent company
has led to the development of a
new curtain-sided trailer and secured
an order worth around £2.5m
for 150 units from rental firm TIP.
