Protect special site
Sir, - At Castle Hills in
Northallerton, a green field site
with a hilltop scheduled ancient
monument, the developer Taylor
Wimpey has applied for outline
planning permission to
build houses right up to the hilltop
fort position.
The developer's archaeological
survey found Stone Age flint
tools and medieval pottery. The
1913 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey
map records finds of Roman
coins and a votive altar. The
Normans had a castle there
when they fought the Scots at
the nearly Battle of the Standard
in 1138.
In the 19th century, the artist
Samuel Buck sat at Castle Hills
and sketched Northallerton
with All Saints' Church, against
the background of Black Hambleton.
That view east would be
blocked by the houses.
There may be those of your
readers who have seen the last
few weeks' letters pages, but
don't know what all the fuss is
about. For them, I enclose a
photograph, a tribute to Buck's
panorama.
I urge those who believe that
the green field land sloping
down eastwards from the Castle
Hills summit should be protected
from development - because
of its historical importance -
should write to Hambleton District
Council planning department.
S H McKEE
Northallerton Road,
Brompton,
Northallerton.
