Carbuncle moment

Sir, – After departing from an extremely successful event – the Big Breakfast in West Burton on Saturday, April 21, my wife and I called in at the new Berry's tea shop in Swinithwaite.

The flapjack and coffee, obliging friendly staff and the surroundings were certainly enjoyable – the project has resulted in what is a very spacious and bright amenity.

However, I looked out of the window onto a pleasant outdoor seating area within the quadrant created by some very well re-furbished out buildings. There are two attractive arches at the end of the outbuilding but upon looking up at the roof line I suffered a Prince Charles "carbuncle moment" – one may recall his reaction to the plans when he discovered what the re-vamped Tate Gallery would look like.

The roofing materials used at Berrys are diabolical – it reminds one of something in a child's Lego set!

I would certainly consider withholding the pay cheque of the national parks planner/inspector who was involved is approving this element of the project..
