Easycare sheep

Sir, – I wish the Prince of Wales’ initiative to increase demand for wool every success (D&S, Jan 29).

But it’s likely to be a long haul.

Wool farming is uneconomic and labour costs will not come down.

In the meantime, the way to maintain the industry’s future is to change to a single-purpose meat sheep. In New Zealand they have Wiltipolls. Here we have the Easycare breed – specially bred for high fertility and easy lambing, live out all year on grass, minimal shepherding and no shearing.

Every year more farmers are changing and finding that sheep can be profitable.
