Sad comments

Sir, – I was appalled by the insensitive remarks of councillors in Hawes following the tragic road accident at Garsdale last week (D&S, July 3).

Some of their comments were quite indelicate, with complete disregard to the feelings of the parents of the young man who lost his life.

Daniel Wilkinson was killed and another man seriously injured in an horrific road accident in a remote rural location.

A road has to be closed in these circumstances for emergency services to attend the scene and later for accident investigation units to examine the site and establish the cause of the collision, which takes time when no witnesses are present when an accident has occurred.

Now I am sure we are all sorry that “local residents were inconvenienced in Hawes and businesses lost custom” but compare five hours to a young life gone forever. Perhaps Coun Blackie and his coterie ought to consider this before lamenting slight inconveniences and lost profits.

As far as censuring the emergency services for being exactly that and attending with alacrity an accident in a different area – I can only hope that the councillors may take a different view should they ever have the misfortune to be in need of assistance themselves.

RODNEY HALL East Mount, Reeth.
