Wheelie bins

Sir, – Could resolutions coming out of the latest meeting of the Greener Darlington Assembly spell the demise of black sacks in favour of a wheelie bin system in our town.

Defeated Euro candidate Nick Wallis stated at the meeting that Darlington council should demonstrate its commitment to the environment by recycling half our household waste.

Earlier, Coun Wallis had hailed the award of an £18m contract to Wades to recycle household waste as revolutionary.

Had the contract been subject to the provision of wheelie bins and vehicles to collect them, it would have been revolutionary.

How many other companies were invited to tender?

Darlington is now the only town in the North-East without wheelie bins. The wheel, invented 3,000 years ago, must be employed to bring Darlington’s garbage disposal unit into the 21st century – it would also defer the increasing number of urban foxes who view the black sack as their new prey.

All elected mayors in the North-East have either installed wheelie bin systems or maintained those existing systems.

David Cameron has promised that elected mayors will be installed in every UK town – do we really have to continue dragging the sacks down our garden paths for another year.

PETER JONES Tower Road, Darlington.
