Sir, – Re the comments on the tragic death of the lady vet trampled by cattle (D&S, June 26), sadly, in spite of her profession, she seemed completely unaware of any danger.
In a field of cows with calves, there’s generally one or two heifers having produced their first calf and if so minded can pose a far greater danger than an accompanying bull.
One wondered had there been a warning sign which the lady might have adhered to, a life might have been saved. Yet farmers posting such a sign solely for safety and welfare of walkers render themselves liable owing to the stupid interpretation of such an act.
I’ve no doubt ramblers from the towns and cities, mostly unaware of animal behaviour, would welcome such signs and accept them in the same context in which they were given.
Anyone out walking with dogs should avoid such herds and, if they can’t detour, then turn back.
DOUGLAS PUNCHARD Keldholme, Kirkbymoorside.
