We did it

Sir, – On June 27, St John’s Church, Hipswell, took a leap into the unknown.

The fundraising committee organised a summer fair and scarecrow festival. The prophets of doom declared that nobody would be interested and we would need plenty of space in our freezers to take the leftover burgers from the barbecue and, worst of all, there wouldn’t be any scarecrows.

But, lo and behold, on the day there they were – scarecrows from the primary school on the seat on the green, a scarecrow defending a goal – no saves that time – while Buzz Lightyear looked on, scarecrow babies, scarecrow choir boys, a Mad Hatter’s tea party in the church porch, a scarecrow MP and some that moved too.

The village turned out in force, all the cakes sold, the morris men had an enthusiastic audience, Dance Fusion were fantastic, the gospel singer soothed the soul and everywhere little painted faces popped up.

There was something for everyone, and the barbecue was so popular that the burgers ran out.

When all was over, the village hall was spotless (thanks Mr P) and not a scrap of litter was left.

Congratulations were dished out in all directions and thank you letters have been directed to all those who participated.

Nobody can say that Hipswell can’t do it. As a famous gent said recently, “Yes, we can”.

On behalf of the village, a big thank you from Cliff and Hilary Bowes, Hipswell.

CHRIS AND HILARY BOWES Hipswell
