Anti-Yarm

Sir, – Stockton has come up with some really brilliant ideas, none of which enhance the parking in Yarm High Street and which will inflict major damage to the Yarm environment.

We have some high-quality shops in Yarm, all of which need their customers to be able to park in the High Street. Having parking ten minutes or more away is not the solution – you will have worn down your high heels long before you get to try on the expensive dress you were thinking of, and in the rain you wouldn’t even think about it.

What is the solution which has been missed time and again in the Stockton’s rush to maximise rateable value in all the major building projects in the centre? Leave the two-hour disc parking in the High Street – have anything less or pay parking will kill Yarm as is being proposed, not just the High Street but West Street and others.

However, back up the current parking by a reasonably-priced multi-storey park on or just off the High Street and we have the answer to the problem at a stroke.

We still have Sainbury’s car park and other areas where a multi-storey could be built.

It works so well in Darlington, with the Cornmill car park above TK Maxx, Billingham and Stockton have council car parks, so why not Yarm?

As for the nonsense of building on the allotments or cemetery extensions, and the last of the green spaces in Yarm, how anti-Yarm and anti-environment can you get?

R W SUNLEY Crofton House, West Street, Yarm.
