Sir, – It is at least breathtaking to see how expenses-cheating MPs can get away without being prosecuted or banned from standing for Parliament in the next General Election.

How heavy a hand those in Government laid on councillors with the Standards Board for England, ready to swoop on any misdemeanour and take seriously any trumped up charges. I and a number of other councillors then had to suffer the penalty of being banned from the council.

That Ann Widdicombe MP was not selected as the new speaker is no surprise. She could indeed cast the first stone, but it could not be expected that the bulk of MPs would vote for integrity.
