FOLLOWING the story headlined “E-book loans on increase” (D&S Times, Feb 10), could not Darlington council, which wishes to close its main library, not consider taking a leaf out of North Yorkshire’s e-book?
I understand that North Yorkshire receives a steady and increasing revenue from its digital lending service, which has the huge benefit of allowing any number of downloads of the same title without having to purchase and store multiple copies of the same physical book.
I don’t advocate this as an alternative to the “real” library, but maybe such a service could provide additional income.
If it were available round the clock (as North Yorkshire’s is) it would effectively make the library service accessible 24/7 to anybody happy to use a digital platform.
