YOUR correspondent has hit the nail on the head when he writes of his dismay about the granting of planning permission for the designer outlet retail development at Scotch Corner (D&S Times, Dec 9).

It is a terrific mistake to compare shopping in Oxford with that in the regions of Yorkshire. After all, where are all these upmarket shoppers coming from who will flood in to buy in the proposed 84 super-shops?

We simply do not need any more shops like we have in Darlington’s Grange Road or Northallerton’s High Street.

In fact, how many shops are there already empty in Darlington, Richmond and Northallerton. Councils are expressing their fears about the situation and there’s even a rumour that M&S in Darlington may close.

A fallback position should be considered for the Scotch Corner development so that the supershops can be designed so that they can be converted easily into housing in the future.

We Yorkshirefolk are very careful shoppers and look after our brass. This aspect seems to have been overlooked.
