WITH reference to David Smith’s letter concerning “cared for greens and verges” (D&S Times, Nov 4), he is fortunate that he lives in Romanby!

In other areas in Northallerton the verges are a disgrace.

After much protesting by residents, the council has agreed to cut them three times a year only. At one time in the early summer, the grass and weeds reached three feet high!

The worst areas are Mill Hill Lane, Crosby Road (outside the primary school) and Millfield Avenue junction with Crosby Road.

The rest of us are having to cut our verges ourselves and then next year, we are going to have to pay £36 for our green bins to take the grass cuttings away!

One enterprising young man has bought a ride-on mower to cut the large area of grass outside his home and next door, at the bottom of Sandy Bank and he makes an excellent job of it.

The only council-serviced areas are those owned by the housing association, for example Valley Road, which is always immaculate.

Perhaps a solution would be to get rid of the grass and let the residents park their cars there to cut down on the problem of the number of vehicles blocking the roads. It must be a nightmare for bus drivers who have to weave in and out of the parked vehicles, especially on Crosby Road.

If the verges were paved it would only have to be done once and then no more grass cutting to pay for – just a thought!
