I HAVE communicated with North Yorkshire County Council about street lighting on the A6108 from Leyburn High Street to Bellerby Road because I have had a complaint from a resident about how that stretch is dismally lit.

I share the resident’s opinion.

The county council tells me that the existing street lighting is the responsibility of Richmondshire District Council because it is only intended to be pavement lighting – not road lighting. The county council considers this to be adequate, although anyone can see that it is not.

This is a busy, in-town, part of an A-road which, by convention, should be better lit than side roads.

This is especially important since this road goes past a school entrance and the school is used at night for public meetings and extracurricular activities.

I urge the county council to consider the wishes of the electorate and not apparently look for an excuse not to discharge their statutory functions. This road is dangerous and it is time that the council listens to the experiences of local people.
