AS we enjoy our Indian summer, bear a thought for the people of Boosbeck in east Cleveland who have spent another terrible year blighted by the smells and sounds generated by the abattoir in the heart of their village.

They have endured yet another year of an ongoing nightmare that should have ended had the council honoured its promises to do something about it.

All the undertakings made in the council chamber have come to nought. How can our elected officials ignore the needs and wishes of their electorate?

The residents have the same hopes and wishes that we all have. They are not asking for any special treatment. All they want is to live in peace and enjoy their homes – even open their windows and let the sunshine in. However, that is not possible because of the smells and sounds emanating from the abattoir all day and most nights.

The constant sight of animal parts and the spillage of the detritus of death are ever present as the residents transit around the village conducting the routine of everyday life, and the effect on young and old minds is incalculable in its damage.

Why do they have to put up with this kind of treatment in the 21st Century? We should stop this abuse now and give the village back to the villagers and let them live a better life in a great community.
