ON Monday, campaigners from at least 30 countries demonstrated their opposition to the long distance transport of live animals.

Why did they chose August 29? It is the anniversary of the worst disaster involving the transport of live animals when, 20 years ago, 70,000 sheep perished when the ship they were on caught fire in the Indian Ocean. They either drowned or were burnt to death. No attempt was made to save them.

The long distance transport of live animals results in suffering and distress. Thousands are transported as far as the Middle East and north Africa where they often receive brutal handling and slaughter.

Sadly, live cattle, calves and sheep are transported from the UK for fattening and slaughtering abroad. The only reason for this is so that uncaring individuals can make money.

The Government says it can’t stop this trade as it would be against EU law, so now is the time to let them know what most people think of this tawdry trade.
