NOW that the dust has settled to some degree on last Thursday’s referendum, I would like to single out the contribution made to the debate locally by the MP for Richmond, Rishi Sunak.

I didn’t vote for him in last year’s General Election and I didn’t agree with his decision to Vote Leave in the referendum.

But I have to say that he deserves enormous respect for the way he led the debate in the constituency.

In organising the four meetings around the constituency to allow people to question him on his argument, he did more than many MPs.

Although work meant I couldn’t attend any of the four debates, I have spoken to a number of people who did and they have told me that Mr Sunak was quite fair in the way that acknowledged the opposing views to his own.

Thanks are also due to the four chairs of the meetings, including your own Chris Lloyd.

As I said, I don’t agree with our MP on lots of things but I think he deserves credit for organising and leading those meetings. A lot has been said about the quality, or lack of quality to be more precise, of the referendum debate. Mr Sunak can be absolved of any responsibility.
