I READ your lead article “Charging to use public toilets” with some scepticism (D&S Times, Apr 8). It was about Richmondshire District Council planning to charge 20p for people to spend a penny.

Not wishing to get bogged down in statistics, so to speak, the figure of 987,659 visits to the 14 toilets in the district sounds remarkably precise and very high for a resident population of 52,749, equating to 18.7 visits per head.

Even allowing for three times that number for visitors, it still amounts to six visits per annum per head.

How is the figure of 987,659 arrived at? Are users of Richmondshire toilets monitored by CCTV or some other fiendish method?

I know we are supposed to live in an open society (well, relatively open), but some activities, even in this day and age, should remain private.
