RECENTLY I read that the Police Regulator of England had stated that he recommended that the drink driving breathalyser level should be reduced to match those in Scotland and most of Europe.
I therefore asked our Member of Parliament, Rishi Sunak, what the Government was going to do about it. His reply was that the Government has no plans to make any changes in the remaining four years of this parliament.
But if the changes were made, because drivers were less inebriated there would be fewer accidents then fewer injuries and consequently fewer deaths on the roads, and that this would benefit the public and the NHS as well as the police.
There are many problems caused by the Government’s austerity. Major cuts have already been made to the police budget and now further cuts are planned. It has been said that in some places the nearest policeman is 40 miles away, with further cuts this could well increase to 60 miles.
Our MP as well, as the Police and Crime Commissioner, should put their case to the Government pointing out the consequences of Government policy. We should be working with the police and studying their recommendations – they are the professionals not the politicians who appear to prevaricate and sadly archive nothing.
