FOLLOWING my letter on the unnecessary closure of the footpath near Bridge Garage in Thirsk (D&ST, Jul 31), I contacted North Yorkshire Council and my county councillor without getting a satisfactory solution to the problem.

My suggestion that the right of way be left open and protected by barriers from any hazard arising from the work has not been given serious consideration or acted upon.

Meanwhile the work continues slowly.

Presumably as a result of the existing closure, barriers have now appeared at Blakey Lane on the footpath on the east side of the Codbeck. A moment’s thought by those involved would have made it obvious that this is even more inappropriate than the original closure.

The footpath routes in the area make this closure completely irrelevant and inappropriate. I suppose it was done because the barriers could easily be dropped off a wagon there and putting them in a more sensible place would have involved work.

Meanwhile local footpaths remain overgrown, and tourists and other walkers are inconvenienced.
