I WAS really annoyed to yet again see false information being reported about the boundary review and the possible break away of Yarm from Stockton (D&S Times, July 24).

In the referendum last year, the people of Yarm were given a one-sided argument in favour of Yarm breaking away and suggesting we would be better served by a council based some 20 miles away in Northallerton.

Among other things, the campaigners completely ignored a letter sent by a local doctor informing them of the reduced effectiveness of services offered by Northallerton.

This referendum is being steamrollered by some Yarm town councillors who have never provided their residents with a fair and honest argument for and against the move.

Time and time again it is reported that 89 per cent of Yarm voted for this break away. The true figure was 89 per cent of the turn-out of just under 25 per cent, which means that only 22.25 per cent of the residents expressed a wish to split from Stockton.

With this in mind, I am not happy that Yarm town council is wasting its time in plotting a move away from Stockton council.

I am proud at what Stockton has achieved. I love using the parks, museums, libraries and leisure facilities. I really enjoy the events put on in our lovely parks and the use Stockton’s residents make of the riverside.

If we were to break away from Stockton Borough Council there would not be the money to fund all these wonderful things on our doorstep.

Yes, we are a cash cow, as is Fairfield, Hartburn, Ingleby Barwick, Eaglescliffe and the countless other affluent areas in our borough. I'm from Yarm and proud to be in the borough of Stockton.

Carole Jones, Yarm, Stockton-on-Tees.
