George Carter and his wife, Jan, left, with Linda Purnell, centre, chair of SPIOTA
THE Stokesley Pride In Our town Association (SPIOTA) was most pleased to learn of the British Empire Medal given to member George Carter in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to the community.
A member of the Town Hall Trust, George was responsible between 2000 and 2003 in raising funds for the refurbishment of the town hall.
Without his input, and that of many volunteers, it would not be the superb building it is today that has been rewired, had its floors replaced, and a new kitchen and bar area plus a lift and wheelchair access installed.
George commissioned local artists, many from the Leven Art Society, to carry out major works of art which in the main hall upstairs are complemented by the magnificent chandeliers and wall lights designed by Frazer Johnston.
George also conceived the idea of Stokesley Entertainment Club and with more than 20 organisations using the building they are helping to maintain the inspiring town hall that is the essence of Stokesley.
