FOLLOWING the letters regarding the Ministry of Defence (MOD) supplying the anti-malarial drug Lariam to our front line soldiers in places like Afghanistan (D&S Times, Apr 10-June 1), I have now received a reply from the MOD, through my new MP Rishi Sunak.

The reply simply says that “no country in the world has banned the drug”. I take that to mean that it acceptable to prescribe this drug to our soldiers.

Mr Sunak has asked the MOD “are there any problems with Larium” and the MOD has replied. Now, due to Parliamentary etiquette, my MP is not allowed to challenge the MOD nor do his own research which would reveal that doctors have being saying for ten years that there can be a problem with this drug, particularly in someone who has access to guns and live ammunition.

The law states that an employer must show a duty of care to its employees. Therefore, our soldiers should not be prescribed drugs that have the potential to cause psychotic problems.

This drug is not supplied to front line soldiers in the American Army – I wonder why?

We need to question the MOD? Apart from taking us to war in Iraq without a plan after the soldiers reached Bagdad, the MOD supplied Snatch Land Rovers (without any protection from IEDs) to our front line soldiers with disastrous and deadly results. It also decommissioned the aircraft carrier Arc Royal before it had ordered a replacement, and when it did order a replacement, it ordered two carriers. A few months later, the new government decided it only wanted one carrier, but it was going to be too expensive to cancel the order, and when the carriers are delivered we are told they will have no aircraft to fly from them.

I could go on...

Who is responsible for this incompetence? Ultimately it has to be the Prime Minister. It is a cultural problem of gigantic proportions, and according to house rules no MP is allowed to challenge it.

Fortunately I am not an MP so I can challenge the MOD and my MP, and say the MOD is incompetent for not looking into the use of Larium.

This incompetence is cross party leading all the way up to our Prime Minister. If it were not so serious, you could say it is like Faulty Towers.
