YOUR picture of Stokesley Market Place (D&S Times, Jul 3) showed an Austin A40 Somerset. I had a Dinky toy model of it, pale blue. I remember some friends’ first car was an A70 Hereford. Bloody great black brute of a thing. A somewhat daintier car of the time was the Austin Devon: was that the A60 I wonder? Didn't all Austins have column gear changes?
I have also been, and still am to a lesser extent, a bus enthusiast and my eyes fell on the rear end of the United Bristol /ECW single decker. It looks like one of a small number of short and light Bristols they operated throughout North Yorkshire at those times. Some were based at Ripon. Way back in 1962, United had a garage which was demolished some years ago and is now the site of Balliol Court flats.
Your second picture of Muker (D&S Times, Jul 10) was a good one for the photo interpreters. I think, after using the magnifying glass, the car is a Vauxhall but I cannot say if it is a Wyvern or whatever.
I recall in the 1960s new Vauxhall models came along, very Americanised with two tone paint schemes, big red lights at the rear, big fins, bench seats (?) and column changes. The top end model was the Cresta.
Let's have a few more of these (and the odd bus too) to keep the challenge going.
Alwyn Boulby, Stokesley.
