THE recent fire and the tragic death in Finkle Street and Rosemary Lane, Richmond, have prompted a campaign for the restoration of CCTV in the town (DST, June 12).
It is being orchestrated by the Pub Watch group which seems very keen for the wider community to pay for the policing and installation of the system as a deterrent to anti-social behaviour, vandalism and violence.
Surely the Pub Watch members’ businesses are a significant contributing factor with these incidents happening in the late evening and very early morning period?
The way it looks to me is that pubs make money on helping people get intoxicated and then they let the community of Richmond pay for the consequences. Now they have the cheek to ask us all to fund a CCTV system.
Should not the Pub Watch group be funding the scheme its members so badly want?
Martin Worner, Kirby Hill, Richmond.
