Sir, – Kevin Hollinrake, the Thirsk and Malton Conservative MP, writing about fracking, says he will "work to ensure that there is no significant impact on the lives and livelihoods of the people in this area", and he reminds us that the fracking companies will be handing over large sums of money to councils who give planning permission to frack.

This is not the Kevin Hollinrake who surprised all the candidates at the hustings in Husthwaite on the April 14 by declaring himself against fracking? On that occasion, and at subsequent hustings, he declared: "I would fight any attempt to industrialise the countryside through fracking...we need to fight fracking in the planning process...we need independent regulations."

The election is now over but the promises made to the electorate are not forgotten.

The Labour Party intends to monitor Mr Hollinrake’s subsequent actions and his voting record on this and other issues raised during the election.

ALAN AVERY, Thirsk and Malton Constituency Labour Party.
