Sir, – I am an avid reader of D&S Times. One of my favourite items is Countryman's Diary by Nicholas Rhea.
The feature about woodpeckers, ie the green woodpecker was very true, the decline over the years has been dramatic. I have not seen one for more 15 years.
I would also like to point out that the caption on the picture used to illustrate the article suggested the pictured bird was a greater spotted woodpecker. I am no expert but the every unusual markings were more like a middle spotted woodpecker which is a very rare bird in the UK.
