Sir, – As a candidate in the Parliamentary election for Richmond (Yorks) I would first like to congratulate Rishi Sunak on his victory and wish him well as our new Member of Parliament.

During my campaign I was privileged to have met so many amazing people. I was welcomed into homes and businesses across the constituency and got to know first-hand what makes this region great – the people.

To learn, therefore, that 8,194 constituents had voted for me was deeply moving. I wish to personally thank each and every one who placed their confidence in me on May 7.

My sincere thanks goes to my campaign director, Peter Hartley, my agent, Martin Vallance, and my formidable team of volunteers who worked tirelessly, helping me leaflet the constituency and visiting 211 towns and villages. Without their help I would accomplished very little.

I would also like to thank the acting nominating officer, Philip Morton, his team in electoral services and those who worked so hard in the polling stations and at the count. I am equally appreciative to Richmond School, Wensleydale School, New Life Baptist Church, the Federation of Small Businesses, and Churches Together for their efforts in organising hustings across the constituency.

Finally, I wish to thank all the other candidates who showed professionalism and good humour throughout the entire election.

The result in the parliamentary election means UKIP is now the main opposition to the Conservative Party in Richmond (Yorks). Gaining a seat on Hambleton District Council was also a first for us. We intend to build upon this success and establish UKIP as serious political contender in this constituency in the months and years to come.

If any of your readers voted UKIP on May 7 and would now like to join us to build an effective political force in Richmond (Yorks) then they can get in touch through our website www.ukip-richmond.org.uk.
