Sir, – With regard to the recent sad news of the death of a man outside the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, may I draw readers' attention to my "head-to-head" confrontation at a Richmondshire District Council meeting with Cllrs Mick Griffiths (Ind) and John Blackie (Ind) about the necessity to retain CCTV in Richmond.
They opposed me when I challenged them that we should keep CCTV at all costs. Cllr Griffiths stated that CCTV was not a tool in reducing crime and was of limited benefit.
Should CCTV been still in use, it might have provided vital evidence to put before any future court proceedings related to this incident.
Cllr MURIEL BLYTHMAN
Richmondshire District Council
