Sir, – Last week you published a letter from me, naming and shaming the Highways Department for putting signs up over Askrigg Moor, saying the road was closed when it wasn’t.

“Good”, said my neighbour, “that’ll get them moving”. But obviously the folks in charge don’t read the D&S.

As of today, Tuesday, the signs are still there, no action is taking place on the road, those in the know drive through, visitors don’t, and I still wait for the response that was promised me within five working days of my complaint on February 26.

Every time I go over the moor to twice-weekly band practice, I am apprehensive that the work might actually have started, and I’ll have to turn back five miles into the trip, on a road that’s tricky for a turnaround in the dark.

What I need them to do is make a special sign which says: HONESTLY FOLKS, THE ROAD IS ACTUALLY CLOSED TODAY. When that one is displayed, I’ll know what’s happening.

Meanwhile I’m looking at my new council tax bill, and thinking of postponing payment for as long as the council have postponed dealing with this problem. That might make them shift.
