Sir, – I have been following your reporting connected to North Yorkshire County Council's proposals for library services, and am filled with admiration for the vigorous response in Stokesley.

However, lower-key reactions in other towns doesn’t mean that people don’t care. And although the closing date for completing the consultation questionnaires was February 8, there is still time to influence the conclusions that will be reached.

Most of Bedale’s inhabitants want the town to be more than somewhere where they sleep, and they believe it deserves amenities. I have set up an email account under the name of Library Action; the address is bedalelibraryfriends@gmail.com.

We have around 80 members, but aim to recruit additional Friends with skills appropriate to a strong steering committee. The ramifications of local government are daunting, but I am sure that there is someone reading this who is familiar with these intricacies.

It may be that some readers have a wide knowledge of how volunteer-run organisations work, or can bring useful skills, knowledge or ideas to our campaign to keep a library in existence to contribute to the educational, cultural, economic and social life of the town and surrounding areas.

We are eager to hear from such people prepared to bring their skills, knowledge or network of connections to this cause.

SUSAN PERKINS
