Sir, – On a recent visit to Hambleton District Council's headquarters, I noticed a large framed display in the foyer showing photographs of the Chief Executive and Heads of Departments. Below three of the four said photographs, including that of the Chief Executive, surnames were prefixed with Phil, Dave and Mick. Sadly, this is presumably considered to be professionally acceptable in such a location.

In view of the positions they hold, the officers concerned are entitled to an appropriate degree of respect from staff and public alike but, to a certain extent, this has to be earned.

It is worth remembering that first impressions are important for they invariably set the standard for what follows.
